Pakar Green Building: Denmark Menyerah Capai Target Carbon Neutral 2025. Mampukah Indonesia?

Pakar Green Building

Entering the 21st century, the world is facing increasingly serious environmental challenges, such as global warming, climate change, flooding, pollution, or waste management. This issue also threatens the sustainability of the environment and life. To deal with it, a joint commitment from all parties is required.

In response to this, in conjunction with the momentum of National Technology Awakening Day on 10 August 2023, Ecobuild held a talk show with the theme “Green Building Strategy Towards Indonesia Net Zero Emission 2060”.

Green Building experts spoke and conveyed their views on this matter, including Iwan Prijanto (Chairperson of the Indonesian Green Building Council), Doti Windajani (Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Architects – Jakarta), Bintang Agus Nugroho (Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Green Building Experts) and Yadi Krisnadi ( EcoBuild Chairman & Advisor).

The talkshow was held online and broadcast live via the YouTube channel and was attended by more than 300 participants from various backgrounds, such as practitioners, academics, companies, government, associations and the media.

This event was opened by Wiza Hidayat (CEO of Ecobuild) and guided by Nur Shabrina Zulfa (Lead Designer – Arkadia Works) as the moderator. Wiza explained that to achieve Indonesia’s net zero emission target of 2060, cooperation and collaboration from all parties in Indonesia is needed.

Iwan Prijanto said that at the end of last year, the most sustainable city in the world, namely Copenhagen (Denmark), gave up on achieving the carbon neutral target by 2025. It is not impossible that a similar thing would happen to Indonesia. “To deal with it, Indonesia must start from nature -based solutions  . Then use  low-embodied carbon materials , for example local materials and 3R materials ( reduce, reuse, recycle ). Furthermore, reduce energy use to as low as possible, and use natural ventilation to achieve thermal comfort, “explained Iwan.

Doti Windajani explained that Jakarta is still facing the  urban heat island issue . “Land use in Jakarta for residential purposes reaches ± 50% so a standard is needed for properties so that the zero emission target in the country can be measured. For this reason, the collaboration of all parties is needed to ensure that the 2060 net zero emission plan in Jakarta can run well, “said Doti.

Bintang Agus Nugroho said that when professionals start practicing with environmental awareness, they will invite others to participate in it, only then will technology be put in to make it happen. “The impression that  green building  is an expensive practice can be corrected, but it requires creativity, fluent knowledge, and a broad understanding of the development of science,” said Bintang.

Yadi Krisnadi explained the steps towards building  a net zero.  “Start from small things that are permanent. First of all, apply  passive design  in buildings, then make efficiency in the use of electricity and water. Take advantage of renewable energy on the land ( onsite ) and if possible, take advantage of renewable energy outside the land ( offsite ) in the form of purchasing a  Renewable Energy Certificate ,” said Yadi Krisnadi.

As a form of appreciation, Ecobuild planted 10 Mangrove trees in Semarang, Central Java on behalf of each resource person. This tree planting is a symbol of Ecobuild’s commitment to participate in preserving a sustainable environment for the next generation.
